Portugal part 2. A bit more personal...about 25 years ago, I stood next to a guy named Bobby in a darkroom class. We talked for months about the 10 year anniversary party he was planning with his partner David. I didn't make the cut for that party lol but it was the beginning of life-long friendships, traveling together, evacuating hurricanes, celebrating holidays and birthdays, showing up when shit got hard, even being a bridesmaid in their wedding. Bobby passed away in June. It's been awhile since we've been able to travel together so Mia and David and I decided to get the hell out. Planes, trains, boats, bolts, vino verde, port tonics, roaming the streets and vineyards and just enjoying each other's company. We couldn't bring ourselves to order prawns in Portugal because Bobby's panko fried shrimp was so delicious but we had one amazing meal after another and ate far too many pastel de natas. One of my favorite little pieces of street art that I saw in Lisbon says, "I am not what happened to me. I am what I choose to become." Obrigada Portugal!
