‘Get backs’ can be great fun but… contempt, anger, and frustration can’t fuel everything. It definitely shouldn’t be what fuels sustainable success and what should be the joy of creation. As a Career Creative of 20+ years and as a Black, queer woman every single thing I’ve done has been in response to the idea that I couldn’t do it for one of those reasons tied to my identity and my chosen career path. That is deeply toxic and the reckoning I’m having with it right now in my 40s is real. The constant fight against the naysayers that are your “friends” and “family”, that are at work, at the social club, or hell even in your bed is daunting and unnecessary. It is sweet when you succeed despite it but I am deeply interested in succeeding because of something and I want that something to be the depths of the belief those people I allow in my space actually have in me. I realize I need deep love, care, and actual unconditional belief in my abilities to fuel me to reach the heights those who actually provide me with that see that I can reach (there are like three people, literally). Anyway, this is an ongoing process and redirection of energy.
