If I'm going to war, I'm going with this guy. 🤍 While my transition to motherhood was a total disaster, so too was Hughs journey to becoming a dad. And while there are selective support groups for NICU and premmie mums, support groups and resources for dads are few and far between... Hugh drove for 5hours, up and down the coast, throughout the night behind the ambulance when Elliot decided to arrive early. Arriving at the hospital 45minutes before Elliot was born, his first moments with our son was accompanying the doctors to intensive care while they fitted a CPAP mask on our little boy. Hugh didn't get his first hold him for a week, riddled with cords, and visits to the hospital looked like finger holds through a plastic box. All the while, a business owner who needed to keep things ticking along, the financial support to our family during those first few months. While there are countless mummy bloggers online, there are a select few 'daddy bloggers' and fewer again NICU dads. There just aren't enough men talking about this life changing experience. Hugh's very good at skimming over the tough stuff and 'getting on with it' but it eventually compounds and wears him down. He doesn't say it's tough but his health will tell him otherwise. Hugh is a wonderful dog dad to his girls Gracie and Bambi, who he rushed to emergency care 2 weeks after Elliot was born for her to be diagnosed with an auto immune disease. Whilst also navigating a skin cancer that needed to be removed. 2023 has not been easy, but the way Hugh has carried himself these last few months has been admirable. Elliot is so lucky to have a dad with strong values, a curious mind, beautiful eyes and a strong chest to fall asleep on.
