For the past couple of years, I've gravitated to language that revolves around how we evaluate and understand land and property. These can be two very different things depending on what we're looking at, and this nuance has been very important to hang on to. There are many cross-sections in my work right now between conceptual reflections on land and depictions of landscapes to the actual stewardship of land in Virginia and New Orleans. These contexts are fully present for me even though they have very different historical relationships. From Hudson River School paintings and European Romanticism to the earthworks of Maya Lin, Smithson and Mel Chin's "Revival Field", there are many experiences to consider, not withstanding the historical and often fraught relationship black folks have to agriculture. These works titled "Sites" become a location to place these ruminations. Their abstract nature leaves space for imagining not only the pictorial but also the geographic physicality of their materials. This is as much about the body's relationship to the land as it is about the atmosphere.
