Sanyo V-SA701 – Vodafone’s Global Standard 3G It’s the year 2002 #pastfuturetechnology. Sanyo is a relatively unknown brand in most parts of the world when it comes to mobile phones, aside from CDMA countries like the USA, LATAM and New Zealand that have received some exports, or even bespoke handsets, from Japan. But in the modern history of mobile phones, they’ve had their say! Partnering with J-Phone which later became Vodafone KK (Japan) and ultimately SoftBank, the electronics giant helped Vodafone to establish itself and its 3G network in Japan. When NTT Docomo released the world’s first commercial W-CDMA 3G network in Japan in 2001, 3GPP hadn’t quite finished the standardisation process for it, and Docomo used the 1999 release specifications with the intention to upgrade its network, or rather its software, to release IMT-2000 at a later point. This was allegedly linked to frequency spectrum allocation that would expire by 2001. J-Phone and Vodafone didn’t need to worry about this step, and in line with 3GPP IMT2000 specifications it partnered with NEC, Nokia and Sanyo to release three 3G compatible handsets. As such, Vodafone Japan became the world’s first 3GPP “standardised” W-CDMA network, and Sanyo was one of the very first manufacturers to partake. The V-SA701 is a 3G-only device, technically compatible with W-CDMA 2100Mhz networks across the globe. 3G roaming wasn’t feasible at this point however, and as such the handset wasn’t designed to do so. It comes with 2x 0.1Mpx CCD cameras – one for video calling and one for photos. Its 2.2” 176 x 220px TFT displays up to 260k colours but the phone is scarcely equipped and features little multimedia functions and no expandable storage. Initially only offered as one of two loan-devices for 3G trials under the name of J-SA001 – the other being the NEC J-N001 (IMT2000 for Manx Telecom) – it is the only one to enter Vodafone’s commercial service as the V-SA701. #mobile #cellphones #cameraphones #flipphone #sanyo #vodafone #legends #lensculture #iceland
