I painted this a few years ago when we stayed at Isle of Palms near Charleston, SC. I felt like I bit off more than I could chew with the architecture, but I love how this painting turned out. I'm sharing it today first and foremost because I think it's a sweet painting that evokes summer, but second, because it's the only painting I've done that features an American flag, which seems fitting to post on an American holiday. I really enjoyed painting the ripples in the fabric and suggesting the stars with just a few white smudges. We had a big breakfast that took a good, long while to cook and made a heap of dishes, but it also made everyone happy on a slow holiday morning. I'm doing a bit of tidying up, will paint at the easel for a while, and my parents are coming over this afternoon to hang out in the pool and grill some burgers.
