Autism And Eye Contact Always Being Too Much or Not Enough••• The amount of times people have said to me “ashra what are you looking at” or turned their head mid conversation to see what I’m looking at. Or said to me “you have an intense stare” “i feel like you are looking into my soul”. It is always not enough or too much. I don’t know where the balance is and it just is not natural to me. Eye contact feels very strenuous and I also can barely concentrate when making eye contact. However, when not making eye contact it is embarrassing to me when people turn to look at what they think I’m looking at. Often when people talk to me I concentrate best when staring at another object, usually something off to the side. So it does look like I’m staring at something very intensely—I don’t blame people for turning to look at what I’m looking at or asking what I’m looking at because from their perspective I’m staring off at some object super intensely and it may seem like I’m not paying attention. Not sure how to get around this. I guess my ultimate hope is for people to just recognize that eye contact does not need to be a norm we expect—some people do it and some don’t. It doesn’t necessarily mean a person isn’t paying attention because they aren’t looking at your eyes.
