It has been a crazy ride this past 5 weeks, and I finally feel like I’m in a place where I can share more of what has transpired since our family “vacation” at the end of July. On our second full day of camping, I sustained a trivial abrasion on my knee. Overnight I started experiencing intense pain and visited the ER in Nakusp - but with no clear sign of issues, I was sent back to camp. Less than 24 hours later I was back in urgent care and ultimately sent to Trail for imaging, again with no diagnosis but incredibly low blood pressure and extreme pain in my leg. This is when things took a turn. Within hours I found myself in ICU, and by the next morning it was confirmed I had invasive Strep A bacteria infection aggressively spreading throughout my leg, and little certainty on how things would progress. For the next 48 hours I had to confront the possibility that the infection could spread to my organs (which carries severe consequences and a high mortality rate), while the following 72 hours held 2 surgeries and a possibility of amputation.
