Why did I become a NICU Nurse? This is one of my most commonly asked questions. Throughout nursing school I knew (point blank) I was NOT going to be an adult nurse. Teeth and pubic hair not for me 😆 I KNEW my heart was going much more Neonatal/Pediatric. And honestly, MOST people don’t know anything about the NICU until you work in the setting. We are a little boutique part of the nursing world. Back in 2012, I applied to many NICU residency programs (out of strategy). I applied to NICUs where the organizations were hiring more NICU new grads by volume. Fast forward 10+ years, I love working in our intricate NICU setting. Some shifts are giving baths / PO feeds and other shifts are crash c-sections / life saving surgeries + procedures. The adrenaline rush, attention to detail, complex pathophysiology of our patients…it’s what gets me goin 🫶🏼 Torn on where you want to work as a nurse? REALLY FOCUS ON THE PATIENT POPULATION YOU WANT TO WORK WITH 🩷NICU: Neonatal ICU - neonates/newborns/preeemies 💙PICU: newborns - 18ish years ❤️CVICU: newborns - 18ish (❣️ focus) 🧡Peds: newborn - 18yrs (medical / surgical focus) 💛Peds Oncology: newborn - 18 ish (CA focused) 🩵Peds ER: newborn - 18 (or whatever comes through the door) 🩶L&D: mostly maternal (mom) + & 1HR baby care 💚Postpartum: maternal + newborn (first 1-3 days) They are all great units, BUT very different specialties with different patient focus.
