The C1 phrase “by and large” is used to indicate a general or overall assessment of a situation, event, or idea. → It can be used to introduce a statement (in that case, a comma comes after it), replacing in general. → It can also appear in the middle of a sentence (just like in my example in this video), sometimes indicating contrast (using but before it) Although this expression falls somewhere in between formal and informal language, it is more commonly used in speaking and informal/semi-formal pieces of writing, so refrain from using it in very formal writing as well as academic writing.
