60 x 76 inches Oil stick and Acrylic on canvas 2023 Inquiry: [email protected] www.galleryjj.org @galleryjjseoul - DM, email, or call. +82 2 322 3979 (main line in Korea) +1 215 906 5200 (if you are in the US) 갤러리JJ는 ‘고스트’와 ‘소녀’ 형상을 통하여 동심 어린 시선으로 따뜻한 공감과 내면적 소통을 이어가는 아담 핸들러(b.1986)의 작업을 선보인다. 뉴욕을 기반으로 활동하는 작가의 회화 작업은 덧없는 인생과 도전, 상실, 두려움과 같은 다소 무거울 수 있는 주제를 천진난만한 아이의 시각으로 환원하여 바라보게 한다. 핸들러의 작업은 인간의 실존적 삶에 대한 각성과 애정으로 함축될 수 있으며, 시각적으로는 어린아이가 그린 그림을 연상시키는 자유로움과 순수함, 원시성의 표출이 전형적인 특징으로 나타난다. 작가는 초기의 어두운 느낌의 모노크롬 드로잉을 지나 지금까지 13여년의 오랜 기간 동안 ‘고스트’와 악동 ‘소녀’가 등장하는 초상 작업을 지속해오면서 점차 튤립과 별이 있는 정원 혹은 우주공간과 같은 만화경의 세계가 펼쳐지는 서사적인 작업으로 전개해나가고 있다. 꿈같은 회화적 장면에는 자신의 일상 경험을 바탕으로 인간 본연의 불안과 상실 같은 삶의 문제들이 유쾌한 삶의 에너지로 치환된다....
