Anissou is the most stoic and gentle being.... Huge, beautiful and brave. Following all the neglect and maltreatment, she lives with pain or the memory of pain. She is incredibly bonded to her own ray of sunshine, Lumière. Yet Ani lives with chronic health conditions. Laminitis can cause colic which can be mortal. We have to be so careful about what she eats and to give ongoing supplements and year-round hay. Ani arrived with truly terrible feet and so we watch her constantly for sudden changes. The Farrier comes every 2 months at most and often every month for Ani. She is in the best shape ever but she tolerates regular feet and arthrtic pains. Less than a month since his last visit, the Farrier saw these videos and came the next day. A sudden abcess in one foot and a tiny piece of wood wedged right up into another, invisible to my eye, despite cleaning. Nothing compares to the incredible expertise of our most brilliant Farrier. The Vet came this afternoon to check the arthritis ( caused by the attack by a stallion when she was only just 3, which also broke her ear.) He said it has flared up a bit around the knee but not too bad so to give some aspirin for a few days. May be the unrelenting heat. The consequences of poor diet and neglect are so sad to see in such a glorious girl, whose blood line is so rare, even for a pure race Baudet du Poitou. Caring for Ani and Dobble is so time consuming and expensive in special feed, vet visits, medication and Farrier.... but they are actually doing so well given their health problems...and are so content with their family and friends.
