In June 2022, a mistaken identity led to a tragic event in Wolverhampton (UK) as 16-year-old British Hindu Ronan Kanda lost his life in a stabbing while innocently buying a PlayStation controller. The perpetrators, 17-year-olds Prabjeet Singh Veadhesa and Sukhman Singh Shergill were recently sentenced to prison with this heartbreaking incident highlighting the issue of knife crime plaguing the streets of many British cities. Veadhesa had purchased a ninja sword set and a large machete online using a fake name. Recent statistics from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reveal a staggering 21% increase in knife and offensive weapon-related offences between September 2021 and 2022. The number of people killed with a knife in England and Wales from 2021 to 2022 was the highest on record for 76 years (source: The Independent). Current legislation is under review by the UK government, which has introduced new knife legislation to curb the sale of bladed weapons. Despite this, critics say it is not enough, with many weapons still available for sale due to legal loopholes. Pooja Kanda, Ronan's mother, has launched an online petition against the sale of bladed weapons ( see @justiceforronankanda for more). In her open letter, she addresses Britain's Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, proposing an outright ban on the online sale of all types of bladed weapons, including machetes, swords, and other threatening bladed articles. Her letter highlights the ease at which weapons can be acquired and inadequate identity checks when weapons are sold online and collected.
