In 1965, after earning a degree in viticulture and enology from UC Davis, and several months researching in Europe, 25-year old David Lett moved to Oregon with 3,000 grape cuttings and a dream. He was determined to grow stylistically pure pinot noir outside Burgundy. Lett would be the first to plant pinot noir in the Willamette Valley, and the first to plant pinot gris in America. In 1966, Lett found the ideal site to start his venture, a 20-acre hillside in the Red Hills of Dundee, some 30 miles SW of Portland. Lett named his vineyard after the nest the red-tailed hawks built atop the fir trees in the vineyard. In 1970, Lett produced his first vintage. A few short years later, the 1975 Eyrie Vineyards pinot noir would be the first American pinot to compete successfully against the renowned Pinots of Burgundy. Eyrie was our final stop this trip and boy was it a grand finale. @eastonrichmond was such an incredible host, so knowledgeable and generous. Eyrie’s wines are seductive. Beyond having great depth, length, and balance, there is a sense of intrigue about them, leaving you wanting to explore them ever more deeply.
