Why is it when a mother leaves work early to attend her child’s event she’s not committed enough? But when a father leaves work early to attend a child’s event, he’s a family man? Why is it when a mother stays at home to take care of her children, she's seen as not contributing to society or not having a "real" job? But when a father stays at home to take care of his children, he's seen as progressive and praised for being an involved dad? Why is it when a mother is assertive and speaks her mind, she's often labeled as bossy or pushy? But when a father is assertive and speaks his mind, he's seen as strong and decisive? Why is it when a mother takes time for herself or prioritizes self-care, she's judged as being selfish or neglectful? But when a father takes time for himself or prioritizes self-care, he's applauded for maintaining a work-life balance? Why is it when a mother shows emotion or vulnerability, she's perceived as weak or overly emotional? But when a father shows emotion or vulnerability, he's praised for being in touch with his feelings and being a "modern" man? Why is it when a mother is successful in her career, people question her ability to balance work and family life? But when a father is successful in his career, his dedication to his family is rarely questioned? Why is it when a mother questions a doctor's recommendations or diagnosis that she is overbearing and a worrier? But when a father questions a doctor he is validated for his concerns? These double standards highlight the need for continued dialogue and action to challenge traditional gender roles and expectations.
