To put it simply, life is made up of days. How do you spend your days? That’s how you spend your life. Building any kind of career, building any kind of practice, building any kind of body of work, just means marking off days. Sometimes we look at big projects, big paintings, or incredible careers, and they seem very overwhelming when you only see the end result. But you can build a massive bonfire with just scraps of paper for kindling. The creative work that you invest in every day is the kindling for just such a bonfire. Any one of those individual efforts may not amount to much. Any single day that you pursue your craft may not make a big difference. But add them all up, and they become an incredibly powerful force. Something that can sustain your life. I often advise my students to get a calendar (a real, physical calendar) and simply mark off days. Mark off days where you worked on your art, invested in your routines and developed your craft. That way you have a visual of the bonfire that you are building. You can look back on all the days you ticked off and think “I am building something. I am building something.” Give yourself that visual: Look at how I have invested in myself today. this week. this month. the last three months… the last year… It’s very powerful to be able to see what you have accumulated.
