Cragside House is set within beautiful countryside in Northumberland, England. Among the pine forests and rocky outcrops, it is considered to be the first ‘Smart Home’, filled with the best technology of the time. While the house is fascinating, the gardens are something else. A walk away from the house, very different from the rest of the gardens is a manicured formal garden. The walk to it from the house involves crossing a high bridge, followed by an uphill walk. I’m sure many thought the same as I, “Why would they create a formal garden here?” However, when you break away from the shade of the trees and find yourself in the vibrant formal garden with views over the surrounding countryside, it’s easy to see why. You can get lost here, a secret garden hidden from the prying eyes of the house. A place you can sit among the flowers, walk through a man made canyon, or play croquet on the manicured lawns.
