Thai summer cold noodle aka Konomjeen Sao-Nam (ขนมจีนซาวน้ำ) and coconut water for a hot day. When I was a kid, we would always go to my grandma’s house in Thailand during Thai New Year (Songkran) and this dish was one of the two options of food my grandma would make—Khao Chae ข้าวแช่ (iced rice soup) and Kanomjeen Sao-Nam. This dish is pretty sentimental to me as I actually never had it outside of my grandma’s house or outside of my family’s home. My grandma lived in a Mon community in Thailand because my granddad was Mon (an ethnic group in Myanmar), and people in that community usually speak Monic to each other, so I actually didn’t talk much to anyone there and ended up focusing on the food instead. Kanomjeen Sao-Nam consists of vermicelli, coconut cream soup with minced fish balls, long beans, bean sprouts, crushed dried shrimps, garlic, ginger, bird eye chilis, pineapples, and medium boiled egg.
