I took this video earlier this year on Eriskay beach in Uist. You can see my husband and son in the background and my little girl making sand castles. It was raining, it was grey and cold but that didn’t bother the kids. Then this majestic rainbow appeared over us and I suddenly felt so overwhelmed that I just burst into tears. It’s wild how nature can do this to us. The tears were a mixture of grief for a time gone by that felt so dark but overwhelmingly the tears were of utmost gratitude for what came about after that difficult time. Once upon a time, I couldn’t have even imagined the vision before me, let alone live it. The tears of gratitude were for all those who were there for me, who gave me hope and helped me to hold on; my angels who showed me the way so I could be here today. Life is full of ups and downs. We will all have dark days but what I’ve learned through 17 years as a doctor, and my own lived experience of severe postnatal depression, is that reaching out and sharing that load is the most powerful medicine there is. It’s the first step. The biggest step. The most important step. I’m thinking of those who are going through a difficult time just now and sending love to all. You’re not alone.
