📖 • Context: The Brazen Bull was a gruesome and ancient execution device designed to inflict a slow and agonizing death upon its victims. It was reportedly created by a Greek sculptor named Perillos of Athens during the 6th century BC, but there are various accounts of its origins. The Brazen Bull was a large, hollow bronze statue of a bull with a door on one side. The condemned person would be placed inside the bull, and a fire would be lit beneath it. As the metal heated, the person inside would slowly roast to death. The bull was designed with a system of tubes and pipes to amplify the screams of the victim, making it sound like the bull itself was bellowing in pain. As for the fate of its creator, Perillos, some accounts claim that he presented the Brazen Bull to Phalaris, the tyrant of Akragas (modern-day Agrigento, Sicily), as a macabre gift. Phalaris, horrified by the invention, decided to test it on its creator himself.
