My new painting “Every Nigger is a Star” is on view at The Armory Show @thearmoryshow at the booth 424 with @lucegallery . This painting is inspired by the song of Boris Gardiner from 1973. Produced in the ideological crosshairs of the Black Power and Black Arts Movements, post–civil rights debates in the United States around the signification and resignification of the word nigger. The 'n' word, the most stinging name that could be thrown at a black person, has had a curious relatively recent history, springing up in rap as an accepted reference for black performers and their 'homies'. Naturally, this was paralleled on the streets, with many a young black male referring to his close friends as "ma niggers/my nigga" The concept talks about someone who used to live in a happy, “sunny and blue place”, which refers to Africa, then comes the fortitude and self-belief ("I can feel it deep inside, this black nigger's pride"). Gardiner says, sees the person in the song in a reflective mood, looking back at generations past and events that had occurred. And something changed in his self-steam. He feels a deep pride in being a black person and he's not afraid to say it every day. He knows that even though he has faced hate and loneliness, there is still a bright place where everyone can be loved.
