The 2023 People’s Choice Award for our staff photography competition goes to vessel crewman Tran Lawrence. Ka pai! 🥇 Tran was onboard RV Kaharoa for a six-week voyage south-east of the Auckland Islands when he took the winning image. 🚢 “It’s a long time to be in the Southern Ocean. It’s rough weather, it’s hard to sleep and everyone’s tired but it was just amazing.” “I called the photo ‘Two sides of expertise’ because I saw the two sides of research vessel life working alongside each other – the vessel crew and the scientists. There’s so much expertise involved in the work on the ship, all coming from different sides.” Tran’s chosen charity to receive the $1,000 in prize money is the Aotearoa New Zealand Breast Cancer Community. 👏 He has a close link to the charity.
