Revised list of places where I wouldn’t travel solo! I took off Rio and added Zanzibar and Johannesburg. I formed this list based on personal experience (I’ve been to all except India) and genuine advice from women who look like me (brown/dark skin Black women.) ZANZIBAR- I recently hosted a group trip there with all women! We did receive unwanted attention around the island and it even got to a point where I had to yell at a guy to stop following us! I was warned by 2 other women beforehand that they felt unsafe there! Next time I host a group there I’ll definitely have a male companion at all times. DUBAI- The only place I’ve solo traveled to where I felt unsafe! I was sexually harassed from the time I landed, when I checked into my hotel, walking around the mall, and on tours. One guy at the mall fully dressed in traditional attire asked “how much” for me? I asked my tour guide why I was being treated like a sex worker and he said it’s because women were being trafficked from different countries in Africa to UAE for prostitution. I didn’t know that beforehand and felt dehumanized that people were viewing me as a sex object based on my skin color. CAIRO- Catcalling and unwanted attention was overwhelming to say the least even with a male tour guide! I have no plans on going back there! JOHANNESBURG- I’ve been 4 times solo to transit to neighboring countries and each time didn’t leave my hotel! Crime rates are high and when local women say not to risk it I’ll take their advice! Marrakech- I went on a group trip with 20 women in 2022 because I was warned about traveling there solo. Unfortunately one woman on the trip was groped while we were ordering food. I wouldn’t recommend women to travel there without a male companion. INDIA- India’s tourism minister said women tourists should not wear skirts “for their own safety” and not venture out alone at night. Indian friends of mine said to absolutely travel there with a male companion.
