📖 • Context: The Teutonic Crusades, also referred to as the Northern Crusades, were a series of medieval military campaigns that differed from the well-known Crusades to the Holy Land in that they were primarily directed towards Northern and Eastern Europe, rather than Jerusalem and the Middle East. These crusades took place during the High Middle Ages, roughly spanning from the late 12th century to the 15th century. They were initiated by the Roman Catholic Church, European monarchs, and various Christian military orders in response to the perceived threats posed by pagan and non-Christian groups in Northern Europe. Similar to the Holy Land Crusades, one of the primary motivations behind the Teutonic Crusades was the spread of Christianity. The Christian church sought to convert or subdue pagan tribes and establish Christian influence in regions that included modern-day Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia. Over time, the Teutonic Knights and other crusading forces established a network of castles and fortifications in the Baltic region to consolidate their territorial gains.
