As the first Artist in Residence to Burghley Horse Trials @lrbht_official many have asked what I shall be doing. The dressage, cross-country and showjumping are very dramatic and photographers do a wonderful job of capturing this, the who and the where. As ever I’m interested in the behind the scenes, dealing with the horses, washing off and preparation or final attention to detail and turn out. Perhaps this is best illustrated in the above study. The painting is actually stripped of detail, the house in pure simplicity, the figures more an exercise in movement with some highlights described in one brushstroke, even the water cascading from the horse’s flanks, only a suggestion. The deliberate lack of information in this sketch describing the general activity of a part of Saturday’s environment. @nicolebrownmedia This is in extreme contrast to the highly detailed painting chosen by @countrylifemagazine for their cover the same week.
