smiling for a pic before I ended the night crying at Disney world One of the most terrifying parts of being a wheelchair user that I will never quite get used to is just how quickly your autonomy and control can be taken away. Last night there was a huge storm with lots of rain and thunder. It stated like RIGHT as the fire works at the end of the night we’re due to start - so obviously everyone starting stampede (a very SLOW moving stampede - caterpillar pace haha) we turned the opposite way in the rain and went to seek shelter until it stopped. We waited until about an hour and a half after the rain started and the fireworks were canceled to leave - hoping we waited long enough to be able to make it out. No such luck. Because of the prolonged lightning both the monorail back to the parking lot was cancelled so they sent us all to the ferry line. It wasn’t until we were in the middle of a swarm of wet, tried, people that they then said the ferry wasn’t going either - and people started to try to leave. It’s terrifying to be in the middle of a huge swarm of tightly packed people and be in a wheelchair. It’s even scarier to then realize there is absolutely no way to get out while others are just pushing needlessly around you. After we got caught behind a metal fence - I completely panicked. Like full on tears makeup streaming down my face terrified. Thankfully for the kind people who noticed and stepped in to help - literally manhandling the fences until there was room and they could lead me out of the crowd. And then to the kind Disney staff who waited with us and helped us figure out how to get back to our resort. It’s hard to be reminded of these parts of disability that are no fun and probably will never go away. It’s amazing to have my mobility and freedom of movement back now that I have a wheelchair buys it’s terrifying being reminded it can be taken away so quickly and is in others control. Here’s hoping day 2 in the parks doesn’t end on such a damp note (both rain or tears 😜) #disneyparks #disneybound #wheelchairtravel #accessibletourism #wheelchairlife #disability #babewithamobilityaid #disabled
