#westcoastwednesday Released on September 13, 1988, today marks the 35th anniversary of “Power”, the second studio album from legendary West Coast gangsta rap pioneer Ice-T (@icet) 🎧 Released on Sire Records (@sirerecords), “Power” was the follow-up to the 1987 debut “Rhyme Pays”. Beginning his rap career as far back as the early ‘80’s, Ice-T introduced the blueprint for gangsta rap on the West Coast with his monumental track ‘6 ‘N The Mornin’’. Following the success of his full-length debut “Rhyme Pays” in 1987, Ice-T returned the following year with his critically acclaimed sophomore effort “Power”. Featuring Ice-T’s then-girlfriend Darlene Ortiz (@darleneog_ortiz) and DJ Evil E (@djevile_1) on the iconic album cover, “Power” remains one of the definitive gangsta rap records of the 1980’s. Including the singles ‘I’m Your Pusher’ and ‘High Rollers’, the former of which inciting a feud with rapper LL Cool J (@llcoolj), “Power” was certified Platinum after peaking at number 35 on the Billboard 200. Production on the album was handled entirely by Ice-T and Afrika Islam (@djafrikaislam) for Rhyme Syndicate Productions 🎧 In 1989, Ice-T returned with his third studio album “The Iceberg/Freedom Of Speech… Just Watch What You Say”. His fourth studio project “O.G. Original Gangster” was subsequently released in 1991.
