My partner works in the public sector while I work in the private sector. Here are some of the major differences I've noticed between our jobs. Private sector jobs are focused on increasing shareholder value and their overall profit, while the public sector focuses on the needs of the general population. I've seen layoffs after layoffs first hand, while he is protected by the union and his job is just overall more stable. Companies can be ruthless when profit is their first priority 😥 Stress level definitely depend on the industry but if we were comparing apples to apples (both having office corporate jobs in finance), I would say that if you don’t want too much stress and tight deadlines, public sector is the way to go. If I ever want to be an executive in the future, I have a pretty high earnings potential as I'll be receiving stocks as a part of my compensation. However, my partner is completely capped. His performance at work and achievements for higher education isn't correlated to his compensation.
