A 1912 map, with a rather unambiguous rendering of the Central London Railway (later forming the central section of the Central line). The westward extension to Ealing Broadway was to run along tracks planned by the Great Western Railway (GWR). Delays due to the war meant that the extended service didn’t begin until the Summer of 1920. Ealing station (without the “Broadway” until 1875) opened in 1838, in the early stages of the construction of the GWR, whose final section was completed in 1841. The line connects London Paddington to Bristol Temple Meads. The Great Eastern Railway, which was grouped into the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923, connected Liverpool Street to Norwich. Broad Street station – immediately adjacent to Liverpool Street station – was a major terminus on the North London Railway from 1865 until its closure 1986. What do you think of the *absolutely enormous* interchange circles and text at Ealing Broadway and Liverpool Street?
