The day after my retirement, I was driving down the road and for about 30 seconds I had a mini-identity crisis. I spent 32 years in the Army. I had 5 different MOSs/Jobs, served in 3 of the most prestigious SOF units in the world, including a Tier 1 Special Mission Unit, travelled to 17 different countries and deployed 9 times to hostile fire zones (5 during GWOT). I came in two weeks after graduating high school as a brand new 18 year old private on his way to be an infantryman in the Ranger Regiment, and retired as a 50 year old Major, serving as Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the finest EM residency program in all of DoD. I gave a lot, but I also gained a lot, and I wouldn’t trade a single day of my career.
