#OnThisDay in 1972, Pimlico station opened on the Victoria line. Then why won’t you find it on this map? Well, because the map is from 1971, and 1971 was before 1972. The first section of the Victoria line to open was from Walthamstow Central to Highbury & Islington in September 1968. An extension to Warren Street followed in December of that year. In March 1969, the line reached its namesake; Victoria station. It wasn’t until 1971 that the extension to Brixton opened, however Pimlico station was a late addition, opening in 1972. It lies between Vauxhall and Victoria, north of the river. In fact, the station only received government approval in June 1968, having not appeared in the original Victoria line plans, which themselves date back to the 1940s and 50s. And that, dear reader, is why poor old Pimlico doesn’t appear on this 1971 map. It’s also the only station on the Victoria line not to have an interchange with either Tube, Overground or National Rail services. There are, however, backlit roundels still at the station - they were common when the line first opened, but no more.
