As evidenced by my last post, my 7-year-old, 10-foot-tall fiddle leaf fig tree was in desperate need of a trim. Trimming will encourage growth (and, usually, new branches) and also means it won’t topple over or snap under its own weight 😅 Another positive is that the part you trim off will become its own little tree. Despite all this, it’s still really scary to cut into your plant baby! Here’s how to do it right: - ideally sometime in the spring or summer (don’t be like me and wait until it’s urgent!) choose a spot on the stem between two leaf nodes where it might be nice for the stem split into two or more branches. - using clean shears, chop the stem in that spot. I know it’s scary and feels wrong, but it’ll be fine! - to propagate the cutting: place the bottom of the stem in a clear vase of fresh water. You may have to remove some of the bottom leaves to do this, that’s totally fine. Keep the vase in a warm, sunny spot. - after a month or two, you’ll notice roots forming. Simply pot the cutting into a container with fresh potting soil and voilà you’ve got a new plant! Fiddle leafs love to be near a window in a bright room but not too much direct sun. The last few slides show the before and after of the mother plant and you’ll see in the 2nd slide that I’ve had success rooting individual leaves as well. Leaves may not always root or turn into plants but it’s worth a shot ☺️ Fiddle leaf figs are so popular and known to be so fiddly.
