Padamsar and Ranisar are Jodhpur’s oldest water reservoirs, and both sit next to each other inside Rao Jodha Park, complementing each other as one overflows into the other. There are a few versions of oral history, as well as recorded history and folklore, about the origins of the Padamsar reservoir. Over the next few days, we’ll introduce you to some of these accounts, we’ll let you pick your favourite story associated with Padamsar! The first version is one of divine intervention that helped Jodhpur get through an acute dry spell. Centuries ago, during the reign of Rao Jodha, Jodhpur faced a severe drought. The people of the city prayed fervently for relief from the scorching sun and parched land. It is said that their prayers reached the heavens and touched the heart of Lord Padamnabh, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. One fateful night, Lord Padamnabh appeared in the dream of a humble shepherd named Bhairon. He instructed Bhairon to dig a well in a specific spot near the city walls, assuring him that water would flow abundantly. Bhairon, a devout man, complied with this divine guidance. To everyone's astonishment, as Bhairon dug the well, water gushed forth from the earth, forming a pristine reservoir. The people of Jodhpur named it Padamsar, in honour of divine intervention. Generations of Jodhpur's residents upheld the tradition of offering prayers and floating diyas (oil lamps) on Padamsar during festivals and special occasions, and continue to do so even today. They believed that these offerings strengthened their connection with the divine and ensured the continuous flow of water. The reservoir is an enduring symbol of hope, reminding all who gaze upon it that even in the harshest deserts, the divine, embodied within the forces of nature and the ingenuity of communities, can bring forth miracles. . . . . . . . #raojodhadesertpark #jodhpur #raojodhadesertrockpark #mehrangarhfort #mehrangarh #ecologicalrestoration #ecorestoration #rewilding #thar #thardesert #geology #rockformations #history#ranisar #waterbodies
