“It is not the job of an architect to create monuments,” said Benny Kuriakose, while describing his project, Quiet by the River, on our podcast.🎤 Situated on an island overlooking the Periyar river🌊 in Kerala, India, the eco-resort embodies vernacular thinking but with a modern, minimalistic look and feel. The design feels starkly aware of its surroundings, reflected in its wide, open windows taking in the views of the river, as well as the assimilation of local design features such as tiled sloping roofs. Use of super local and recycled materials indicate another kind of awareness – one of the resort’s impact on the environment.🌿 For instance, local stone has been used for the building’s super-structure to reduce transportation costs owing to the building's difficult location. “This building is on an island. It's surrounded by water on four sides… So to transport the building materials was very difficult. That is why we picked up the stones from the locality,” explained Benny. In addition, most of the wood used in the building is recycled, saving upto 40% on timber costs.
