I’ve been advocating post-practice for ages! When I think about my own preparation for C2 Proficiency many years ago, I realize how pointless it was to work incessantly on more and more exercises. Although I managed to pass the exam, I never really knew why I got the correct answers to an exercise. It was when I started preparing students for exam that I finally learned the role of post-practice. Preparing students meant revising exercises in which I had already working on. In the process of revisiting them and auditing my answers, I developed beyond belief… so much so that I’ve created workshops and courses focused on mastering the papers. And guess what? The focus of my courses is not on getting the right answer but on why right is right and wrong is wrong. What’s more, the focus is also on “how can I prevent myself from making this mistake again?” Post-practice IS your zone of development.
