Don’t let the somewhat nice light and warm and comfortable atmosphere in the pictures fool you, today was tough and so was yesterday. Weather is rough in Cape Town and load shedding still painfully unpredictable. I had to do pickups while still baking which led to the table a little empty today when I finally got around to take my selfie. Bread really is my child these days I’m protecting it with all my heart. 😅 A few people wrote me earlier how I’m able to get through these days and that I’m a hero for producing this many loaves at this quality in these mad circumstances. I feel more like a survivor than a hero to be honest and am a bit tired of having to work around periods of no electricity and invent new schedules every week. It’s exhausting and also not always working. I overproved my rye loaves yesterday because I couldn’t bake them when I should have and the fridges only had 4h of electricity throughout the night which also led to a few country loaves on the flat side. I’m proud and happy to be able to still somewhat deliver but this can’t be the new reality. It’s been 2 years of excessive load shedding stages now and with this cold front hanging over the Cape and my house barely reaching 18°C I just feel physically uncomfortable most days. 🥶 I wish for at least a couple weeks with electricity all day and night and above 20°C in my house, is that too much to ask? 🙏🏼 But yeah, I made it work another week and am otherwise doing well and so is Boinks and my finally also my car.
