Today is #nationalpuppymillawarenessday 🐾 Killian spent the first nearly 4 years of his life trapped in an Amish puppy mill. He wasn’t loved, he wasn’t socialized and he wasn’t allowed to be a real dog. Killian can’t tell us about what he suffered through but the physical and emotional damage he exhibited sure gives us clues. Before coming to our home as a foster (lol) he stayed for over a week in a veterinary hospital. Then named Dawson, he suffered from severely infected ears, cataracts, major skin damage, a heart murmur, hip dysplasia, double pneumonia and a uti. He was petrified. He’d never been in a house before. He didn’t even seem to know what grass was. The first week was filled with crate reactivity, cowering from people, hiding in corners and even a refusal to eat. Luckily, he did like his foster sisters Mojito and Julep basically immediately. They got started teaching this big goofy boy what being a loved pet was all about. Slowly, Killian learned to trust and love. Watching him blossom into the confident, happy and fashionable boy he is today has been one of the greatest joys of my life, and I’m so thankful he chose us. Living in Ohio, we are surrounded by mills, mostly Amish. The only way to stop these repulsive businesses is to stop giving them your money. Never ever buy a puppy at a pet store, online breeder or mill. Purchasing from these places keeps dogs just like Killian trapped in the cycle of abuse. Mills and brokers have gotten better at disguising their insidious truth, tricking pet parents into supporting their evil businesses.
