Three Mistakes I Made When I First Started FLY FISHING ⬇️⬇️⬇️ 1. Obsessing over “Matching the Hatch.” — Fly selection is absolutely important but once I realized it doesn’t have to be perfect, I caught more fish. I just made sure my flies were the right size and close in color to what was coming off of the water when dry fly fishing. 2. Casting anywhere. — When I first started fly fishing, I remember just casting anywhere on the water. Even if I was nymphing or using dry flies, I was just hoping to be lucky. After I learned to read the water for basic signs of where fish might be lying, I caught more fish. I learned to look for rock seams, foam lines, and tail outs of pools as I feel they were the most easily noticeable for a beginner. 3. Setting the hook. — I missed a lot of subtle takes when dry fly fishing because of an improper hook set. I was setting the hook like I was bass fishing or throwing a jerk bait…I was trying to rip lips. Once I learned to set the hook more subtly downstream of the take, I caught more fish. Getting into fly fishing can be a little intimidating at first especially if you are trying to learn simply from videos and the internet. A good mentor can really teach you a lot but is still no substitute for trial and error.
