RICK WAKEMAN / YES: The third magician of the keyboards and synths was Rick Wakeman and along with Keith and Tony they were the hat trick of monster keyboard magic. Ricks chops are phenomenal and his playing legendary but it was his ability to find the right notes, Melodie’s and sounds that took Yes’s music to a whole new level. From the first time I heard his Hammond solo on “Roundabout” I knew he was a killer player. “Fragile” was the gateway drug and then came “Close to the Edge” which was about as perfect as it could be. I think Rick has mentioned that he’s not sure how they did what they did on that album (IIRC) and I can see that as the vision and execution was unlike anything else. And his solo album “The Six Wives of Henry the VIII” was the shizzle for me. I used to stare at the inside gatefold, point at the Minimoog and tell my parents “I want one of those!!”. Never did own a Minimoog but in 1975 I did get a Micromoog and it was off to the races.
