Exactly one year ago, Iranians everywhere were forever changed. #JinJiyanAzadi. #ZanZendegiAzadi. #WomanLifeFreedom. Three words became our rallying cry after Jina Mahsa Amini, an innocent 22 year old woman, was murdered at the hands of the so-called morality police in Iran for having a few strands of hair showing from underneath her mandatory head covering. Her name became a rallying cry. Her death fired up a movement for human rights, freedom, and equality around the globe. It wasn’t the first time Iranians took to the streets demanding freedom from an oppressive dictatorship that stole our homeland from us and ripped so many of us away from our country, but this time Iranian woman were leading the first female led revolution in history and Gen-Z was using the power of technology to inform the world of the brutal dictatorship that has held our beautiful country captive for 44 years. They were marching, with their allies fighting just as hard alongside them, not just for freedom in Iran but for equality and to #endgenderapartheid across the globe. We’ve lost more than ~500 innocent lives (most of them under 25 years old) and had 22K arrested for simply standing up for #womanlifefreedom. As we look ahead, let us never forget #mahsaamini, #kianpirfalak, #nikashahkarami, #sarinaesmailzadeh, #mohammadhosseini, #mohsenshekari, #hadisnajafi, #yaldaaghafazli, #hannanehkia, #hamidrezarouhi, #mohammadmehdikarami, #majidrezarahnavard and the countless others who’ve stood up for change (and carved a permanent home in my heart). May their sacrifice remind us that change is possible, that progress is unstoppable and the only way we can be successful is when we unite together for a common cause.
