What if we tell you there is Hogwarts in India as well? The Mayong village of Assam is known as the land of black magic. The name Mayong to the word Maya (illusion), another belief system attributes it to ‘Ma- anga’, “ma” meaning mother and “anga” referring to the ‘yoni’ of the mother goddess.The records of black magic association by the pundits called bej goes as far back as 600 years ago. Records from Buddhist, Jain, Mughal text attest to sorcery and kala jadu. Most sorcerers are farmers. The services almost free of cost, with a minimal remuneration called guru manani (offerings in the name of the guru). It is believed that people from Mayong are masters not only in bejali (folk-medical practice) but also in jadu (the art of magic).Manuscripts of magical formulas, known as mantra-puthis, occupy a vast area of old Assamese literature.The mantras are mostly written in prose form in the old Assamese language and Kithali script. In a composite system like Mayong, the use of magic for constructive purposes like healing, and the use of magic for causing harm to someone for individual gain are both known and balanced. Thus, petting biras, dainis and other spirits at home isn’t unheard of. Fortune telling through cowrie shells, augury practices, palmistry and spirit possession are common.
