On 16 September 2023 a notable event in the WWII community took place in Poland. Personnel from “Panzer Farm”, a private Polish military museum and military events planner, recovered an extremely unique and rare German Bergepanther recovery vehicle. According to various sources, this Panther is an Ausf. D model which was originally built by the Siebert Tank Plant. That factory along with the Stahlbau GmbH tank plant delivered 113 Bergepanthers to the German Army from July 1944 to March 1945. Of that number, 71 were made using the “Umbau” (Conversion) Panther Ausf. D chassis, the same one used by the recently found vehicle. Up until September 2023, no Umbau Panthers were known to exist. _ This Bergepanther belonged to the Werkstatt (Workshop/maintenance) Kompanie of Panzer-Regiment 2 and was lost for unknown reasons on 13 January 1945 when it was sunk in the Czarna River in Poland. During its recovery, parts of a Panzer IV (slide 10) and Sdkfz 250 were also found. Unfortunately they were in a much poorer state than the Bergepanther. _ Interestingly this isn’t the first WWII vehicle found in the Czarna River. In 1989 a Panther Ausf. A was found which now resides at the American Heritage Museum in Hudson, Massachusetts, USA.
