'The best things in life are free' 'The best things in life are the things money can't buy' We hear these phrases a lot. And I don't disagree with the sentiment of either of these statements… but I don't think they're helpful when someone is struggling with their financial situation. You can't just 'look on the brightside' or 'be grateful for what you do have' if your basic needs aren't being met. Don't get me wrong, gratitude is important - and I do think it can help a lot with mindset. As are positive affirmations and positive thinking etc. They are all useful tools in reprogramming your relationship with money. But if you don't have money, can't pay your bills or heat your home or feed your family it just isn't enough. Money provides us with the necessities. The foundations to enjoy the free things in life. Money makes it easier to be thankful and to be appreciative. All of this to say - there's got to be some balance. You can be happy and grateful for what you have but you don't have to feel guilty about wanting more money either.
