Scotland is not only about landscapes and lochs but beautiful and historic towns and cities. I start with one of my favourite, St Andrews. Known as the home of golf and the oldest golf course in the world the Old Course in St. Andrews is a must see. Golf began it's life here in Scotland and was a popular sport that continued to grow rapidly as years progressed. However, there was an abrupt end to this when James II of Scotland introduced a ban on the playing of golf. James II introduced this ban believing that young men were becoming too distracted by playing golf, consequently neglecting their archery skills. 😅 Fast forward a couple of decades and the ban was eventually removed by King James IV, who actually became a golfer himself. The town is a lively cocktail of visitors with a large dash of history in a small town. It attracts a lot of people not just for golf but the small town's population is increased immensely by university students during the academic year (1/3) . This is where prince William met Kate Middleton and fell in love. It's the third oldest university in the English-speaking world and the first Scottish university to allow women to enrol as undergraduates (1892), as well as initiating the blueprint for the first students’ union in Britain (1888). The town became the Ecclesial capital of Scotland and was renamed St Andrews after Andrew the Apostle. I enjoyed this small ancient town brimming with prestige and history with lots of beautiful old ruins and loved the metropolitan atmosphere despite its size.
