#OnThisDay in 1793, George Washington laid the cornerstone of the U.S. Capitol. It was recorded in the Alexandria Gazette that Washington placed a silver plate under the cornerstone of the capital building. The inscribed plate was said to be placed at the southeast corner of the building. However, it is unclear which corner Washington placed the plate under. The two possible locations are the southeast corner of the Senate wing or the southeast corner of the building as a whole. Over two centuries later, the Architect of the Capitol has still not located the cornerstone, even with the use of metal detectors. Visit the U.S. Senate website to learn more about the ceremony.
