“Furthermore” and “what’s more” are both transitional phrases used to add information or provide additional points in a sentence or paragraph. There are some subtle differences between them, which often get advanced users of the English language confused, mainly when writing. “Furthermore” is more formal in tone and is commonly used in academic writing, reports, and formal speeches. It is often used to introduce a point that builds upon or reinforces the previous one, implying a logical progression of ideas or information. Example: “Using the word furthermore in your essay can help you build a more organized text. Furthermore, it is a less common word, helping you get some extra points as regards the language criterion.” I’d say furthermore can be used in speaking when the context is formal, for example, in the court. “What’s more” is slightly less formal and can be used in both formal and informal writing and speech to introduce a surprising or contrasting point that adds to the argument or discussion, implying that the new information is unexpected or noteworthy.
