“Negus League” 260 x 150 cm, Acrylic on Canvas, 2021. During 1920 the Negro League was formed because black people were not being accepted into the major and minor baseball leagues due to racism which established the color line in the USA, so they formed their own teams and had made a professional baseball league. In the Ethiopian Semitic languages, the “Negus” word is to exalt a person. The meaning of Negus is king and its used as a title of the sovereign of Ethiopia. Back in 2021 during this road trip I passed through New York, Newark, Philadelphia, Baltimore, DC, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and end up in Florida. I was listening to this podcast were they talked about the Negro League and I got inspired to create a painting that would celebrate this moment in the history of USA. After that I started to like baseball and saw this sport with different eyes. Now I’ve even come to be a Baltimore Orioles fan. Despite the fact that I am a Brazilian, to know what those athletes had faced and what they have made, it was a big political statement in order to do what they most loved which is to play baseball.
