WALKING & BREATHING PSOAS MUSCLE VS. THORACIC DIAPHRAGM MUSCLE Walking and breathing are intimately connected through the psoas and the thoracic diaphragm muscle. The psoas major is the main muscle of walking, it connects the spine to the legs. The thoracic diaphragm, is the essential muscle of breathing. There are plenty of other muscles involved at different times for different reasons but the main muscle we use for respiration is the thoracic diaphragm. With each inhalation the diaphragm and pelvic floor should lower (synergistically) and with each exhale they should rise back up moving the contents of the trunk with them. Add to this up and down movement the rotational possibilities of the psoas moving in rhythmic opposition and every breath and every step we take can tone and massage the entire contents of the trunk. There are also anatomical connections between the psoas and the thoracic diaphragm that literally connect the acts of walking and breathing. There are two tendons for the diaphragm called the crura that extend down and connect to the spine right alongside where the psoas is attached. Another connection is through one of the ligaments of the diaphragm, the medial arcuate ligament. It wraps around the top of the psoas, and another muscle, the quadratus lumborum. Finally the diaphragm and the psoas connect through the same fascia. There is a particular fascial grouping that connects the diaphragm, psoas and other hip muscles, including the quadratus lumborum. The relationship between these two titans of walking and breathing can’t be understated and is essential.
