JOE ZAWINUL / WEATHER REPORT: It was the anniversary of Joe’s passing on September 11 and I was remiss in doing a post and wanted to do another anyway. All keyboard and synth players have at least a few artists that really inspired and moved them in a direction they might not have ventured into and for me Joe was one of those. I never expected to be able to compose, play, or arrange anywhere near his caliber but there was some underlying simplicity and lyrical quality to his style, especially his incredible synth work. It always sounded slightly otherworldly, emotive and ethereal like it was coming from some unknown country. His ARP 2600 sounds on “Mysterious Traveler” were so mystical and transformational for me and I adored everything he did from then on. As a synth programmer and sound designer I often try to channel his tonalities into projects hoping that I capture some of his essence and the sounds I create will inspire others as Joe inspired me.
