What would the world would be like if dads were held to the same expectations as moms? I mean, is there even such a term as “hands on mom?” After 7 years of parenting, we’ve figured out how to share the load and not resent each other. I know some moms would rather their partners just knew what to do. But men are a different species (and also conditioned by society) so he’ll probably need you to help him be a hands on dad: 1. Talk about expectations - being on the same page upfront can avoid petty arguments about whose turn it was to change the baby’s diaper. 2. Be direct - I’m not good at asking for help so I’d hint hint, nudge nudge, expecting him to read my mind. Once I specified what I needed help with, he happily came to the party. 3. Let him be a dad - I only became a good mother because I tried, failed, learned, and tried again. I needed to give him the space and opportunity to get to know his kids. I eventually realised he didn’t have to do it the same way I do, and that’s okay. As long as the babies were happy and safe. 4. Praise him - in the early days, I made it a point to thank him for doing things, and acknowledge the things he does well. It encouraged him to want to do it again, and also to praise my efforts too.
